Hi,
Most of us have been out of LLRM medical college for many years now, and LLRM medical college must have changed over the years. Opening of private medical colleges in the area and private hospitals have probably affected the patient numbers but to the best of my knowledge a good number of patients still go to the LLRM medical college hospital. Unlike in some cities in India there is no discrimination against outsiders in Meerut. Your fluency in Hindi will be a bonus if you choose Meerut because you will have to talk with the patients in Hindi.
Adjusting to Hostel life could be a problem anywhere. Back in our days PG girls hostel had good accomodation facilities but I have no information on it's current status. Meerut has its fair share of violence (also Kolkata has its fair share as well). Usual precautions (not going alone late at night, avoiding certain areas in old city, avoid wearing jwellery in public, locking doors etc.) that a person takes in most cities in India are usually enough in Meerut, but there is no fool proof guarantee against violent crimes. Another major problem in U.P. is the frequent power cuts.

Choice between Kolkata and Meerut will be entirely yours.
(I have my roots, both in Kolkata and MEERUT :) )

Best of Luck !

Hi Padma !
You seem to be in a real quandary. It is however, quite true that LLRM Medical College, Meerut has lost its sheen over the years. As my friends & contacts in Meerut tell me, there is an acute shortage of staff in the college & most of the workload (as well as the gifted faculty) has shifted to Subharti Medical College, Meerut. How much this fact is going to affect you, I can't really tell since most of the studying & learning in PG has to be done by the students themselves (though it surely helps if you have a shining star in the faculty). The proximity of Meerut to Delhi could be a point in its favour.
Regarding your other fear, that of Meerut being a violent city, let me assure you that it is more fiction than fact. True, there is some crime there, but tell me which place in India is crime-free. Then, the atmosphere inside the campus is simply superb. I just loved it. There is no discrimination with Southies, if that is what you had in mind (prevalent as the discrimination against Hindi-speaking people is down South). You can rest assured on that count.
If there is any other query in your mind, feel free to voice it on this forum. All of us will be only too happy to help a junior. Best of Luck.
Bye for now & GOD Bless.

Rakesh.
