JDA strike in LLRMC

Postby Himadri Roy » Sat Jul 04, 2009 2:31 am

Just read in the desi newspaper that the Junior doctors in LLRM medical college are on stike. As per the newspaper report administration has asked them to vacate their hostels. Junior docs are demanding similar pay scales as their counterparts in KGMC. IMHO this demand is fair. Why should there be different pay scales in different medical colleges in the same state ?

Hi,

This reminds me of many such strikes (or similar events e.g. curfew due to riots) of our time. It was a routine then - at least twice in a year or some times more.

I remember Dr Anil Kapoor use to be one of the related factors to all of these strikes; sometimes the cause of these events or leading the group after the event. One of the famous ones where Rajeev Rastogi became initial heroes of our batch was against the City Bus Operators (Rastogi's famous nara - Seeti Bus Mein, Aag Laga Do during the procession is still fresh to my ears).

There was a lot, who suddenly used to become very active in such situations. They talk to college administration, district administration, press and other larger unions of state e.g. Student Union of Meerut University, IMA City Chapter or Joint RDA of the State of UP etc. The tea-shops outside the college, used to become hub of all active (medical) politics. Some of my colleagues (who were more home sick than others) used to take this opportunity to visit their homes.

Some of our batchmates like Hemant, Hirendra Sharma, YD, Anil Tewari and some from the senior batches like Sanjeev Rana, Tillu Boss (Vijendra Singh lambe wale - the shorter one was called Tyaoon Tyaoon), Anand Pandey, Shalabh Kudesia and many more....... used to stay in hostel only. It used to be a gala time for us - no classes, no clinics - Bus Dallu, Ruchika and lot of gossip and masti. With stethoscope in neck ..there was no restictions on so called doctors like us to raom in city with curfew. We have identified routes (andar andar galiyon mein) where you may go to any point of the city during full curfew without coming on main roads. That was a fun.....no fear.

I am sure many of you would recall several stories from past.

Cheers, Sanjeev

Dr. Anil Kapoor had an uncanny ability to become a focal point of most of those strikes  . B.P. Singh's picture in local newspapers showing him in emergency ward with bandages all around his head and 'smiling for the camera' after allegedly getting hit during a brutal police 'lathi charge' will always remain fresh in my memory. City buses were sometimes the cause and often the targets of these stikes :D .
In one such strike after a vocal nara from Rajeev Rastogi - City Bus Mein, Aag Laga Do more than 3 dozen students ran after a city bus which was standing near the gate. The driver took off with the bus at full speed. Ambrish Gupta was leading (presumably due to superior athletic skills) the charge towards the bus. He was carrying his favorite weapon, a peice of broken brick (addha in hindi). He expected that all others will follow his lightening charge  . Unfortunately he didn't realize that others in the group were less athletically inclined. After about 250 meters or so.... conductor and driver - saw that only one person was chasing the bus and that too with just a small brick in his hand. They stopped the bus and threatened Ambrish with an iron rod. Ambrish looked back for support but saw that other members of his brigade had stopped way back. He again used his athletic ability but this time it was to run back as fast as he could

I, too, remember a time when our college was on strike. The provoking incident was the ragging of a junior, Fahim Iqbal, I still remember (probably '91 Batch), by Deshbandu Gautam & a chemist. Apparently, the chemist took his friendship with Deshbandu Gautam to be a license to indulge in ragging. This irked a few seniors of the '87 Batch, Hemant Sharma, Abrar Ahmad & others. Santosh Boss too joined in & soon a procession of boys from the SB Hostel took off & caught hold of the offending chemist. He was brought back to the SB Hostel where he was made to apologise for his act of indiscretion by rubbing his nose on the ground in front of all. Meanwhile, Gautam Boss had fled the scene, correctly fearing for his own safety, as anger was pent up in all the boys for him (having allowed a non-medico to rag a medico). Anyway, the chemist shop was ransacked & the chemists promptly went on strike, demanding action against the guilty. Tempers remained frayed for a few days & we were "advised" to refrain from using the hospital gate & rather use the college gate for coming & going out. More later.....
Bye for now & GOD Bless.

Thats so true Himadri! Anil Kapoor Boss had a strange knack of being involved in such controversies. But he was a fighter and quite a sport compared to several others.
So far as Narebazi is concerned...there is a second part of it which goes like this...as the enthusiasm was high, our morale was at its peak (we were still in first year) and everyone wanted to show how much we could do with seniors...One of us will shout the nara and rest will follow...and it was going in insequence. City Bus mein Aag Laga Do....Jo hum se takreyga....Medical College Union Zindabaad. Suddenly Rajive changed the sequence and shouted first..Medical Union...the rest of the guys whose mind have been conditioned by now- did not hear the change and shouted Aag Laga Do- i.e.City buso mein..Aga Laga Do, Medical College union-aag laga do!
Soon everyone realized but it was too late as some of the seniors got hold of us but simply asked us to modify the naare bazi!
Apart from this, there were other strikes which we witnessed and in one also participated actively which could have been very deterimental to our carrers otherwise... I hope Bong and Shalini remembers this well as Sanjeev and Dheeraj were not in the college by then.
I agree with Sanjeev that during the strike, it used to be masti time!
More later...
Cheers and ciao
