MCI president arrested on bribery charges

Postby Himadri Roy » Fri Apr 23, 2010 12:38 pm

A shocking news in today's newspapers

Medical Council of India president Dr Ketan Desai and two others were arrested late on Thursday for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs two crore to grant recognition to a medical college in Punjab. Dr. Desai was arrested late last night after the CBI conducted searches at his office here following information that he along with his associate Jitender Pal Singh was allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs two crore to recognise a college in Punjab, CBI spokesperson Harsh Bahal said today. Bahal said that Desai along with Singh and another associate Dr Kanwaljit Singh of Gyan Sagar Medical College in Punjab have been arrested by CBI on corruption charges. The CBI laid a trap after receiving a complaint and caught Singh allegedly with Rs 2 crore which was to be delivered to Dr. Desai.

This has been happening for years - not new Himadri. You talk to anyone working for Medical Colleges (esp private medical colleges) and you will come to know how MCI is deep entrenched in corrupt practices. This has been aptly supported by political leaders in all these years for their vested interests (many of them running their own private medical colleges).

This case is same as IPL - Ketan Desai might have refused to extend favour to one political leader -so he might have trapped. Or Health Ministry may be looking at getting Lion's share by putting their proxy in helm of this controversy, which they may not be getting otherwise. It will happen eventually - they will put someone like OSD - wait for some time.

Yes, Sanjeev, for this was likely happening for years. Like other power centers India (from Babus to Ministers), corruption seems to be deeply entrenched in MCI. During my student days, I remember there were rumors of favors being asked by MCI teams for recognizing a college and PG seats. Perhaps they were not just rumors.
What was surprising was the arrest of the MCI president. You have rightly said that it is most likely something to do with some kind of political power play

Pointing towards the tip of the iceberg, some more follow up information on this topic that I came across on internet:
http://infocera.com/Huge_assets_seized_ ... i_8997.htm
Had MCI Chairman Dr.Ketan Desai’s deeds not been uncovered he would have been the master of numerous assets. 10 Houses in Gandhinagar, Ahmedabad, 1.5 Kgs of gold, and 80 Kgs of silver have been unearthed from his residential premises. The list does not end here. Desai also invested 20 Lakhs in a home finance company. His real estate assets include a plot of land and a property in a shopping mall as well.

http://www.todaynews.in/city/ahmedabad/ ... 68345.html
A whopping 13 bank accounts containing Rs 1.8 crore, two lockers with gold worth Rs39 lakhs, two plots of land worth crores in Ahmedabad, a piece of land in Sanand and as many as 10 posh houses in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. This is what the Central Bureau of Investigation has so far found through the documents recovered after the raids on Dr Ketan Desai's house in Ahmedabad.

I also saw two very familiar names (that most LLRMites would recognize) on IBN live website :

Don,t know whether this is all media speculation or they have have some solid evidence to back these charges :?

Sanjeev your Bhavishyavani (prediction) was correct:
Sanjeev said: Health Ministry may be looking at getting Lion's share by putting their proxy in helm of this controversy, which they may not be getting otherwise. It will happen eventually - they will put someone like OSD - wait for some time.

Now in today's news:
The Centre is likely to dissolve the Medical Council of India (MCI) following the arrest of its chief Ketan Desai on charges of corruption, media reports said. With Medical Council of India (MCI) president Ketan Desai resigning on Wednesday, the Union health ministry on Thursday brought in an ordinance before the Cabinet calling for a complete dissolution of the Council's present board. MCI Act does not give the government powers to take to task MCI board members, an ordinance is required. A seven-member panel of eminent doctors is expected to carry out the functions of the MCI for now until the medical body is dissolved through an ordinance.

Hi Boss ! It is quite true. Medical Education has really become a joke. You just see the kind of people in Medical Collegs today. You wouldn't believe you were in an institution of higher learning, let alone a medical college. No decorum, no merit. Just money bags all the way. Baap ne admission dila diya hai to paas bhi wahi kareyega. This is the attitude of the students. Most of them don't bother coming to classes. And those who do come are sleeping in their chairs.
Bye for now & GOD Bless.

Yes there is deterioration in medical education and standards...oops levels have gone down the drain. I stated so becuase as reflected it seems there are no standards left.
Having said so...I think the current generation has to take the responsibility and young faculty like you Sadhu have to take things into your hands since you guys are involved and have to initiate the change within the system. People who are outside the system can only play supportive role. Recall the days when going to the field as part of SPM classes was considered a waste till our dear Dr Chopra pushed each one of the junior batches to come to UHC and remained true to his teaching and discipline. I can bet there would be several hundred of our college mates who would be thanking him with in their hearts for making then learn a few things as large majority of them are in government jobs and have to perform all these functions.
The point I am trying to emphasize is simple that it is the current faculty which has to improve the standards of education by following a discplined approach. Phir Dekho ki kiska baap paas karvata Hein aur kis mai ke lal ki himmat hein jo chair pe sota rahe!!! At the same time learning has to be made interesting and joyful. In private colleges also there are better performing ones including Manipal, Subharati, Sawali, Parvara Medical Trust Loni etc. there would be more but am not aware.
Anyways! Hopefully the current interim arrangements which have people like Dr Sareen and Dr Devi Shetty bring some standards and sembelence of ethics into the autonomous body to allow performing its functions. Lets hope for the very best.
Cheers and ciao
